Cornell Experience Modernization Initiative

As common as possible, as different as necessary

Readiness Initiatives

Currently, the university’s administrative services span multiple systems across our global campuses, with different groups using different tools and processes to accomplish the same tasks. To realize the vision of having seamlessly integrated systems across our campuses, Cornell needs to build a solid foundation that is as common as possible and as different as necessary. The readiness initiatives aim to do just that.

Chart of Accounts

The university currently maintains separate financial systems with different accounting structures across campuses, making it difficult to consolidate financial information and analyze data effectively. Establishing a common Chart of Accounts will enable clear financial reporting and simplified cross-campus operations.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) System

The university currently uses multiple CRM systems across different units, resulting in fragmented communication and inconsistent experiences for our constituents. Examining these systems for potential consolidation will help us create more coordinated, effective relationships with our community members, partners, and stakeholders.

Data and Analytics

Cornell’s fragmented reporting systems make it difficult to gather and analyze data across the university, hindering informed decision-making. Creating a unified data repository with standardized reporting tools will enable comprehensive insights and more effective planning across the university.

Donor and Engagement Experience

Providing a more effective and meaningful solution for interactions with its donors can help ensure the university is strategically, operationally, and technologically equipped to build stronger donor relationships and enhance the overall donor journey.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System

Today the university maintains multiple systems (Kuali, SAP, Workday, etc.) that handle similar functions across campuses. Consolidating these core administrative functions into an integrated platform will streamline operations, reduce maintenance burden, and improve the user experience.

Gap Apps

Over time, units have created hundreds of custom tools to fill gaps in core systems, resulting in a complex web of shadow systems that are difficult to maintain and secure. Identifying these essential functions will ensure they’re included in our new integrated solutions, reducing complexity while meeting critical needs.

Identity Management

The university’s campuses currently use different login systems (NetID, CWID), which has resulted in significant barriers to easy collaboration and sharing, and a cumbersome experience in accessing systems. Developing a unified approach will ensure seamless access to resources across Cornell’s global network while preserving security and supporting collaboration among the university’s medical affiliates.

As common as possible, as different as necessary.

“As common as possible, as different as necessary” is the guiding principle to reflect the CEMI vision for administrative and financial systems across our campuses in Ithaca, New York City, and Doha. Common solutions will allow information to flow seamlessly among campuses, enabling everyone to easily get the answers they need. We’ll maintain unique solutions only where truly necessary.

Shaped by the Cornell Community: Get Involved

Contribute your skills and experience to CEMI (“See Me”). Community members know the current processes and systems best—and what it’s going to take to change how we do things. Please submit the form for your campus to be added to the contributors list and receive quarterly updates:
