Cornell Experience Modernization Initiative

As common as possible, as different as absolutely necessary

Workday Administrative System

Many of the university’s core administrative needs in human resources, finance, and budget on each campus can be streamlined in a single platform, Workday.

The Ithaca campus utilizes a previous version of Workday for its Human Resources system. To distinguish the university-wide Workday platform for administrative service from Ithaca’s HR-only module, the new solution is sometimes referred to as Workday Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Workday Administrative System.

Approach

Early in the CEMI readiness activities and before a vendor was selected, a core working group coordinated the research and requests for proposals. That group of Cornell community members invested an enormous amount of time in the selection process.

Shifting from Readiness to Implementation

With both a vendor, Workday, and a system integrator, Huron, on board, the university’s responsibilities are being shared among more Cornell community members who will provide their functional expertise to guide the implementation phase of the Workday ERP workstream.

Key Update

Quarter 1, July – September: Continued evaluating of request for proposal responses regarding a new ERP platform to serve as the foundation for the university’s single administrative systems and processes related to Budget, Finance, Human Resources, Post Award Research Administration, and—potentially—Student Services. Completed price and contract negotiations.

Next Steps

Quarter 2, October – December: Make and announce the vendor selection decision to the university. Begin shifting from readiness activities to planning and implementation activities.

Functional and Technical Leadership

Guiding the overall Workday ERP workstream are Cornell leaders with broad views of the university’s overlapping budget, finance, and human resources systems and data. Refer to each focus area for the team leading that aspect of the Workday ERP workstream.

Achieving a seamless digital environment across Cornell will require coordinated progress on six interdependent initiatives — like building all the legs while simultaneously raising the a table.
